Twelve losses in a row. The Knights were a disaster, and The Earl Hays Press made sure the papers said so.

This is an original production-made prop newspaper created by The Earl Hays Press for Barry Levinson's The Natural (TriStar Pictures, 1984), starring Robert Redford. The front page of this 1939 New York paper carries the headline “New York Returns Home from Knightmare Road Trip - They Stretch Their Losing Streak to Twelve.”

Before Roy Hobbs turned the season around, the New York Knights were a laughingstock, and this headline captures that low point perfectly. It's the kind of prop that does double duty: it tells the story of the film while looking completely at home on a 1939 newsstand.

The Earl Hays Press has been Hollywood's premier prop house for printed materials since 1915. Period newspapers are among the most demanding props to produce. Every typeface, column width, and headline style has to match the era. This front page was designed and printed to pass as a genuine 1939 New York broadsheet under the scrutiny of the camera.

Frame it. Display it alongside your baseball memorabilia or classic film collection. Pair it with the Chicago Daily Tribune prop from the same production for a striking two-piece display. This is a tangible piece of one of the most beloved sports films ever made.

Did you know? The New York Knights are a fictional team, but The Natural's production design rooted them firmly in the real world of 1930s baseball. The film used authentic period details such as uniforms, stadiums, signage, and printed ephemera to make Hobbs's journey feel genuinely historical. The prop newspapers created by The Earl Hays Press were part of that world-building, designed to look as though they'd rolled off a real press in Depression-era New York.
